Online This-is-Not-Crown Salon! 2017

Online This-is-Not-Crown Salon! 2017 published on No Comments on Online This-is-Not-Crown Salon! 2017

Hello my fellow Needleworkers.
Welcome to our Online This-is-Not-Crown Salon! Please take a moment to ply your needle while information on needleworking goings-on is shared!

The ever-lovely Sabrina (Robin Berry) has Rose Pouches well in hand. The March Rose Pouch is being created by Kim Gallagher with Heidi Woordhuis beginning on the next. Interested in what it takes to make a Rose Pouch? Visit the Files section on our WKNG page and read all about it, then get in touch with Sabrina. She is very responsive to Rose Pouch information requests.

A request has come in from Regalia for new royal napkins to replace the old, worn out pair. Liz de Belcaire has taken on that project with Guild thanks.

The Napkin project needs Needleworkers!! If you can embroider, please get in touch with Liz de Belcaire as soon as possible. The last Royals received their napkins, but incoming Royals are lacking an artist to create their napkins. Napkins are provided as well as guidance if you wish. Kindly get in touch with Liz for more information.
Do you have an artistic flair as well as the ability to organize (or even write down a list and not lose it?) The Royal Napkins need an organizer sooner than we hoped. Liz is happily (for her. We’re a little peeved by the thought) moving north, out of the West (soon, but not quite yet) and seeks someone to take over organizing the Napkin artistry. If you Know People, this would be a terrific low-stress volunteer position to take on. Please step forward, talk to Liz and accept our admiration!

Lastly, we have distressing news to report. Vashti (ElizaBeth Gilligan) has lain her needles down and succumbed to cancer in mid-October. Vashti was a talented author, enthusiastic needleworker, lover of life and gentlewoman with a huge heart who was always willing to help anyone. She leaves the world a much poorer place for her absence. We shall all miss not just her art, but also her great heart, tremendously. Peace is yours now, Vashti.

Thus concludes our online Salon. May your needles fly true until we meet again.

West Kingdom Arts and Sciences Pentathalon!

West Kingdom Arts and Sciences Pentathalon! published on No Comments on West Kingdom Arts and Sciences Pentathalon!

Coming to Collegium Occidentalis on November 18!!!

To compete to become the Kingdom of the West’s next Arts and Sciences Champion, you must enter at least one item in each of these four categories:
• Practical Science: A science that is not necessarily a trade. Includes making textiles, cooking, weaving, brewing.
• Technical Science: A science that is a trade or would require learning from a professional. Includes woodwork, metalwork, leatherwork, glasswork
• Performing Art: An art you present to an audience. May be original or period
• Fine Art: A visual art used primarily or solely for aesthetic beauty. Includes clothing, calligraphy, oil painting, illumination, needlework.
AND supply a fifth entry…
• Research Paper or Masterwork: A substantial piece of academic writing using independent research into a topic with a description of the findings of that research. Or a piece using at least 3 of the 4 previous categories. (A research paper could be any length; most judges appreciate it being less than 10 pages. Keep in mind that a research paper should cover a single discrete topic. If one finds one’s paper going on for pages, then one might consider narrowing ones topic thesis.)
The victor in the Pentathalon will be invested as Kingdom A&S Champion at 12th Night! For more information about the post of A&S Champion, please see http://www.westkingdom.org/kingdom-inform…/laws-kingdom-west, Article IV, Section 7.5
Come, take this Championship from me!!
(thanks to Krysta of Starfall for most of the words.)

October Crown Salon – Canceled, 2017

October Crown Salon – Canceled, 2017 published on No Comments on October Crown Salon – Canceled, 2017

Hello Happy WK Needleworkers Guild!!
Your trusty Guildmistress here to spread the news.

Crown is coming, and so is smoke from some very impressive fires. While we were hoping to host Salon at Crown (and had a host!), the breathing quality is expected to be such that I’d rather not entice my fellow Needleworkers with the promise of saucy needle-wielding companionship. You shall have to entice yourselves as Salon will not be held this Crown.

Instead, in the first half of next week, we’ll be doing a version of Salon online, here on the Guild page. You’ll be brought up to date on Rose Pouches, Royal Napkins and the Regalia situation, as well as a moment of remembrance on the untimely passing of one of our own.

For those Needleworkers going to Crown, We Salute You!
For those Needleworkers choosing to stay home, stitch in gloriousness!!

Until Salon online, may your silks be smooth, your gilt untangled and your needle always fly true!

Guild Meeting – June Crown & Beltane, 2017

Guild Meeting – June Crown & Beltane, 2017 published on No Comments on Guild Meeting – June Crown & Beltane, 2017

Holy Needles and Gilt!
Where does the time fly!?!

So much has happened since the last Guild Update. Salon at June Crown was FABULOUS!! 10 people came to create and discuss, including a Gentle new to the Needle Arts who had a semi-private consult with a Guild Mentor! There was laughter and stitching and news about Napkins, Rose Pouches and how cross stitch isn’t period, but there’s an analogue that’s really quite similar. The West Kingdom Newcomers Tour passed by and stopped to learn about the WKNG. Our praises were sung to the heavens!! We are, indeed, a wonderful assemblage of artists! Many Thanks to the Westermark Pavilion for hosting Salon on the List Field!

Then, Salon at Beltane!! We proved that the West Kingdom Needleworkers Guild can stitch their way right through the gates of fiery purgatory!! With temperatures over 105, Salon sought refuge in the shady arms of Alys and Balin’s pavilion on the List Field. Plied with cool water and wonderful conversation, we created goldwork and blackwork while watching fighters shimmer on the field. It was a good day to be a Needleworker in the shade! Many thanks to Alys (Susan Cole) for hosting Salon with such goodwill, in such challenging heat!

West AnTir war wasn’t fortunate enough to have a Salon of their own, but our next War Cloak Artisan accepted the challenge. Signy Jólinnardóttir will be stitching the next West An Tir War Cloak. Thank you Signy for taking on the creation of the Hero’s cloak. Some fortunate An Tirian fighter will treasure it forever!

Guild Meeting – June Crown, 2017

Guild Meeting – June Crown, 2017 published on No Comments on Guild Meeting – June Crown, 2017

June Crown is upon us and it’s time for Salon!

Come rest in the shade at Needlework Salon Saturday, June Crown. Bring your needlecrafting, expertise, chair and enthusiasm to share! Invite someone new to needlework! Catch up on the latest and greatest SCA Needleworking chatter.

Half an hour after Invocation ends (enough time to fetch your needlebasket), join us at the sign of the Needleworkers Guild Banner for an hour or two of gentle camaraderie creating art. Look for us on the List Field. Salon is open to all, with an especial welcome to needleworking-curious gentlepersons.

The West Kingdom Needleworkers Guild hopes you’ll join us in celebrating and creating handworked art at Salon this June Crown.

Guild Meeting – March Crown, 2017

Guild Meeting – March Crown, 2017 published on No Comments on Guild Meeting – March Crown, 2017

Hello Gentle Needleworkers,

March Crown approaches and so does our Needleworking Salon! An opportunity to sit together plying our needles while watching combatants on the field!

We’ll have a brief WKNG update meeting just after Invocation, (once the fighting begins) which will lead directly into the Salon. Please bring a chair!! If you have Needlework projects, new, old or in process, the Guild would love to display them during the Salon on a table dedicated for the purpose.

There is the tiniest hitch in our list-field plans as the Queen has declared reserved space will be for only a very small number of groups. We do not qualify, so we need an early-arriving Needleworker to hold a space onsite precisely at noon or slightly before. A volunteer is requested!

Information on the Needleworking class held during Salon, will be posted shortly.

Thank you to all the fine needleworkers out there, helping make the West Kingdom a more beautiful place to play!

(edited to add that we need someone to save a spot for the WKNG)

-Heidi
