October Crown Salon – Canceled, 2017

October Crown Salon – Canceled, 2017 published on No Comments on October Crown Salon – Canceled, 2017

Hello Happy WK Needleworkers Guild!!
Your trusty Guildmistress here to spread the news.

Crown is coming, and so is smoke from some very impressive fires. While we were hoping to host Salon at Crown (and had a host!), the breathing quality is expected to be such that I’d rather not entice my fellow Needleworkers with the promise of saucy needle-wielding companionship. You shall have to entice yourselves as Salon will not be held this Crown.

Instead, in the first half of next week, we’ll be doing a version of Salon online, here on the Guild page. You’ll be brought up to date on Rose Pouches, Royal Napkins and the Regalia situation, as well as a moment of remembrance on the untimely passing of one of our own.

For those Needleworkers going to Crown, We Salute You!
For those Needleworkers choosing to stay home, stitch in gloriousness!!

Until Salon online, may your silks be smooth, your gilt untangled and your needle always fly true!

Holy Needles and Gilt!
Where does the time fly!?!

So much has happened since the last Guild Update. Salon at June Crown was FABULOUS!! 10 people came to create and discuss, including a Gentle new to the Needle Arts who had a semi-private consult with a Guild Mentor! There was laughter and stitching and news about Napkins, Rose Pouches and how cross stitch isn’t period, but there’s an analogue that’s really quite similar. The West Kingdom Newcomers Tour passed by and stopped to learn about the WKNG. Our praises were sung to the heavens!! We are, indeed, a wonderful assemblage of artists! Many Thanks to the Westermark Pavilion for hosting Salon on the List Field!

Then, Salon at Beltane!! We proved that the West Kingdom Needleworkers Guild can stitch their way right through the gates of fiery purgatory!! With temperatures over 105, Salon sought refuge in the shady arms of Alys and Balin’s pavilion on the List Field. Plied with cool water and wonderful conversation, we created goldwork and blackwork while watching fighters shimmer on the field. It was a good day to be a Needleworker in the shade! Many thanks to Alys (Susan Cole) for hosting Salon with such goodwill, in such challenging heat!

West AnTir war wasn’t fortunate enough to have a Salon of their own, but our next War Cloak Artisan accepted the challenge. Signy Jólinnardóttir will be stitching the next West An Tir War Cloak. Thank you Signy for taking on the creation of the Hero’s cloak. Some fortunate An Tirian fighter will treasure it forever!

June Crown is upon us and it’s time for Salon!

Come rest in the shade at Needlework Salon Saturday, June Crown. Bring your needlecrafting, expertise, chair and enthusiasm to share! Invite someone new to needlework! Catch up on the latest and greatest SCA Needleworking chatter.

Half an hour after Invocation ends (enough time to fetch your needlebasket), join us at the sign of the Needleworkers Guild Banner for an hour or two of gentle camaraderie creating art. Look for us on the List Field. Salon is open to all, with an especial welcome to needleworking-curious gentlepersons.

The West Kingdom Needleworkers Guild hopes you’ll join us in celebrating and creating handworked art at Salon this June Crown.

Guild Meeting – March Crown, 2017

Guild Meeting – March Crown, 2017 published on No Comments on Guild Meeting – March Crown, 2017

Hello Gentle Needleworkers,

March Crown approaches and so does our Needleworking Salon! An opportunity to sit together plying our needles while watching combatants on the field!

We’ll have a brief WKNG update meeting just after Invocation, (once the fighting begins) which will lead directly into the Salon. Please bring a chair!! If you have Needlework projects, new, old or in process, the Guild would love to display them during the Salon on a table dedicated for the purpose.

There is the tiniest hitch in our list-field plans as the Queen has declared reserved space will be for only a very small number of groups. We do not qualify, so we need an early-arriving Needleworker to hold a space onsite precisely at noon or slightly before. A volunteer is requested!

Information on the Needleworking class held during Salon, will be posted shortly.

Thank you to all the fine needleworkers out there, helping make the West Kingdom a more beautiful place to play!

(edited to add that we need someone to save a spot for the WKNG)

Guild Meeting – June, 2016

Guild Meeting – June, 2016 published on No Comments on Guild Meeting – June, 2016

What a lovely meeting we had at Crown! The pub was oversubscribed, so we moved to the quieter Westermark pavilion. There was discussion of the Rose Pouches, which are well in hand thanks to the foresight of our good Sabrina de la Bere (Robin Berry). We also welcomed a new member to the Needleworkers Guild and admired the beautiful and self-taught needlework on her Vikings. We also discussed the future direction of the West Kingdom Needleworkers Guild.

**Increase Guild Renown with minimal increase in guildmember effort, or time taken in court.
**Increase awareness of the effort that goes into Guild largesse.
**Increase outreach to new needleworkers, including teaching new skills and stitches.
**Increase the pool of available needleworkers to make largess for the Kingdom.
**Increase the fun and give us new opportunities to gather together and play.

With these points in mind, we are going to try something fun. Event Needlework Stitching Salons!!

We can’t all have pavilions on the List field, but we all love to watch the pagentry while visiting with friends. Let’s band together to find a pavilion on the List Field during events, where we can gather our chairs, visit and work on our needleworking projects in complete view of the populace, complete with light munchies and water, if not stronger drink. Rather like a Publick House with better embroidery for people interested in needleworking. (Westermark Pavilion will likely be available, but it would be kind to spread the load so it’s not always resting on their efforts.)

**Ongoing guild projects (War cloak! Napkins! Rose Pouches! Cushions!) worked on under the admiration of the public (complete with small signs declaring what the project is and the number of hours worked so far),
**a decoratively painted sandwich-sign out front declaring Needleworking Questions are Welcome and Come Join Us! will attract new members,
**a chance to rest ourselves and chat with friends while needleworking, and still be able to see other on-going activities.

Doesn’t that sound like fabulous fun?!! No meetings, no schedules, just needleworking and chatting and leading others into better embroidery of all kinds. With deliciousness.

What do you have to do? Well, bring your embroidery. Bring the war cloak and napkins and rose pouches you’re working on. Bring your personal projects and a way to display them, hopefully with a small sign saying how many hours went into the work, what kind of needlework it is and your name. Bring extra ‘waste’ supplies so new people can try a stitch or two, or make largesse themselves. That’s it!

The next local Kingdom level camping event looks like Purgatorio. Let’s get started, there! (although if there are people willing, I’ll be at West AnTir and would love to host a gathering, there too! Speak up if you’re going to West AnTir and would love an afternoon to sit and stitch with me!)

Hello Needleworking Artists of the West Kingdom!

June Crown is coming up, so it’s time to gather together to share what we’ve created, find out what others have been making and talk needlework! Let’s meet at 2pm, shall we?

It would be lovely to meet in shade on the list field. If anyone in the Needleworkers expects they’ll have a dragon-wing or other shade on the field we’d be welcome to use, please let me know.

Hypocras will be available for those with cups, so bring yours with you! Looking forward to seeing you all again at Crown, 2pm!
